Àreu Sawmill

Both the physical environment and the social system in the high mountain regions have undergone a lot of changes. In the area there are still examples of a heritage making it possible to get to know, conserve and value an economic system and way of life that is in the process of disappearing.
A visit to the Serradora d’Àreu, as a sample of this heritage,
helps to understand the role of water as a source of energy for powering flour mills, sawmills, fulling mills and forges. In the 1920s, a Francis turbine was introduced to produce electricity. The demonstrations enable you to see how, by harnessing water power, wood was worked as a raw material and, at the same time, how flour mills were operated. In addition to the mill there is a reception building selling tickets and a small exhibition explaining how the sawmill worked.
Àreu Sawmill

Àreu sawmill, built in the 19th century, is testimony to the timber industry that flourished all over the Catalan Pyrenees. At first it was further down from where it is now, beside the river, but it was washed away by a flood.
